I’m a professional eater and I still managed to order a chai-tini at 11 a.m.

on a Tuesday. That’s the kind of judgment this job requires, and honestly, Albany rewards it.

Around here, we measure our pride in the steam off a fire bowl, not just the view of the Capitol. One day you’re lost in a cozy pub with a fantastic gin pour, the next you’re face-deep in carne asada nachos that could end a friendship.

I ate my way through town for you, and I’m still full. The list is right there.

Go get messy.

I found The Squeaky Cork by accident, and I'm so glad I tripped into that door. It feels like a cozy pub that someone decorated with love and a slight obsession with charming details. The drink selection is fantastic, with options that made me want to try one of everything. The staff are just kind and welcoming, which matters when you're flying solo and slightly awkward. I settled into a corner, sipped something wonderful, and felt like a regular by the end. It's the kind of place where you linger longer than planned. I did. No regrets.

Massive, thick, juicy burgers
Crispy tots done right
Ideal bacon-egg breakfast sandwich
Friendly, patient, accommodating service

The Mad Platter Cafe does burgers that defy logic. Massive, thick, and impossibly juicy, they demand both hands and a napkin bib. I paired mine with crispy tots done exactly right, salty little nuggets of joy. But the real surprise was the bacon-egg breakfast sandwich, which hit that ideal balance of savory, smoky, and comforting. The service was friendly, patient, and accommodating, even when I changed my order twice. I am that person. They smiled anyway. This place is a neighborhood gem that makes you feel like you've found a secret. I left full, happy, and already planning my return.

Sweet Red Bistro feels like stepping into a bygone era, all charm and low light. The drinks and charcuterie are top notch, with an impressive cocktail and alcohol selection that makes choosing hard. My steak arrived full of flavor, even though it was a touch overcooked, which I'll forgive because everything else was spot on. The service has been impeccable every single time I've visited, which is rare and wonderful. It's a place that makes you feel special without trying too hard. I felt like a character in an old film. I even pretended I had a secret. I don't. But I enjoyed the fantasy.

Calapooia Brewing is my kind of pub. The fish sandwich was delicious, flaky and fresh, and the veggie melt held its own, all hearty and satisfying. I washed it down with their great chili beer, which is a weird combo but trust me, it works. The service was friendly and fast, and I loved the cozy covered outdoor area where a live band played. Those skin-on fries were perfect, salty and crispy. And they sell Vivacity, my absolute favorite gin, which sealed the deal. I sat there, sipping, listening to music, and feeling annoyingly content. I'm not mad about it. I'm just surprised.

Homegrown Oregon Foods has a steak fire bowl that is honestly a work of art. Tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, it made me slow down and savor each bite. The homemade fire sauce is worth buying by the jar, and I'm not usually a sauce person. My wife loved both street tacos, which disappeared fast. The decor is eclectic and fun, with friendly service that made us feel at home. Portions are generous and prices are fair, which is a rare combo. I left with a full belly and a smile I couldn't shake. I think I found my new comfort spot.

Royal Bar & Grill surprised me in the best way. I went for bingo night, expecting cheesy fun, but the owner is a hilarious host who kept the whole room laughing. The paneer was the best local version I've had, grilled perfectly with that char and softness. Butter chicken and samosas both shine, rich and comforting. The service was so kind, and the food was so good that I felt bad leaving. I tried not to embarrass myself with how much I enjoyed it. I failed. The comedy was on point, and I've already planned to go back. Maybe for the paneer. Definitely for the laughs.

Best chai-tini ever
Scratch-made kitchen magic
Incredible steak bite sauce
Unforgettable mozzarella sticks
Fast, amazing service

Loafers Station has the best chai-tini I've ever tasted, and I've had a few questionable ones. It's creamy, spicy, and somehow refreshing, like a hug in a glass. The kitchen does scratch-made magic, with every dish tasting like someone actually cared. The steak bite sauce is incredible, tangy and rich, and the mozzarella sticks are unforgettable, crispy outside and gooey inside. Service was fast and amazing, even when the place was busy. I felt like a VIP without any of the pretension. I left completely satisfied, slightly tipsy, and plotting my next visit. This place is dangerous. I love it.

The menudo was hot, flavorful, and large, perfect for a chilly day. The folks there are friendly and make you want to return. I walked in hungry and walked out happy, with leftovers that lasted two meals. That's value. That's quality. I'm already counting the days until I can go back for those nachos again.

I had a great coffee and a solid bagel, but the real selling point was the patio, perfect for lingering with a book and zero guilt. Amazing as leftovers, too
Best pizza in the area
Friendly fix, generous gift card

PizzAmoré is the best pizza in the area, and I will fight anyone who disagrees. The dough is real, with that perfect chew, and the marinara tastes like it was made with intention. The triple threat, whatever combo of toppings I tried, was always well done, crispy on the edges, and generous with the cheese. Even as leftovers the next morning, it somehow stayed amazing, which is a pizza miracle. The staff were friendly, and they even gifted me a generous card after a small hiccup. That's how you build loyalty. I've already planned my next order. And the one after that.
