The burger search starts near the intersection of Mission and Lancaster, where drive-thru signs blur into used-car lots. You have to look sharp, because the best patties in Salem are not always the loudest.

I ate my way through a dozen spots, from a theater with chandeliers to a food cart with a cult following. The Kobe burger at Chira's came on a gluten-free bun that actually held together.

Runaway Kitchen's smashed patty arrived with bacon so thick it needed its own fork. That is the range here.

The list below is where you start.

The Best Little Roadhouse sits off the main drag, and you might miss it if you blink. The parking lot was half full on a Tuesday, which told me regulars knew something. I ordered the burger, of course, but the salmon salad on the next table looked excellent. The patty was cooked right, with a seared edge and a soft bun. Prices are reasonable all around, which matters. The service was friendly, and the room felt easy. I could see exploring the wide menu on another visit. Nothing fancy, just solid work.

Stadelis Roma Burgers LLC is a strange name for a burger spot, but it fits. The menu leans Italian, with recipes you will not find elsewhere in Salem. I tried the Classico sandwich, which was affordable and full of flavor. The burger I had on a second visit came with fries, and the whole thing felt like a one-of-one experience. The staff let me eat at my own pace, and the happy hour looked worth stopping by. If you want a burger that does not follow the crowd, this place earns a stop.

Beehive Station has a fenced patio out back, and that is where I sat. The garden-like atmosphere made the wait easy, and the seasoned fries arrived first. They were worth trying, crisp and salty. The burger came with a diverse set of toppings, all authentic. The patty was juicy, and the bun held up. It felt like a neighborhood spot where people linger. I would come back for the outdoor seating alone. The food is honest, and the service was fine. A solid choice if you want a meal outside.

Gilbert House Children's Museum is not a burger joint, but it has a burger on the menu. I went with my nephew, and we both ate. The burger was decent, nothing more. But the real draw is the museum itself. The outdoor labyrinth is huge and engaging, and the bubble machine kept the kids busy. The staff is friendly, and families seem to come back again and again. If you are here for the burgers, you are missing the point. But the food is fine for a quick bite between exhibits.

The bacon was thick, and the smashed patty was juicy. The shoestring fries were crisp, not oily. The homemade ranch and Runaway Sauce added a kick. It costs a bit more, but you get what you pay for.
