I’ll drink on a patio in Portland maybe twice a summer, usually fleeing the sun like a vampire with a sun allergy. But this round of reporting turned me into a bona fide patio evangelist, dragging my dog from the dog-friendly sprawl of Bye and Bye to a club where I survived, barely.

I downed espresso martinis at Rontoms, licked ranch off my fingers at Star Bar, and nearly proposed to the trout at Over & Out. The spread here runs from polished cocktail salons to a worn-in flannel of a bar, and I’ve got the stained shirt to prove it.

Here’s where to find me, and you, this season.

Massive patio for big groups
Live music Sunday nights
Attentive service for large parties
Delicious scallops and fondue
Espresso martinis worth trying

Rontoms is where I go when I want to feel like I’m at a party that’s already in full swing. The massive patio swallows big groups whole, and somehow the service keeps up. I ordered scallops and fondue, and honestly, I’d build a meal around that combo. The espresso martinis? Worth every jitter. Sunday nights bring live music, which turns the whole place into a joyful, loud mess. I’m not usually a patio person, but this one rewired me. Go early, grab a long table, and let the chaos happen. You’ll thank me later.

Cocktails too good for photos

Teardrop Lounge made me feel like I’d stumbled into a cocktail salon where everyone knows the secret handshake. Oysters and warm bread started things off, and I nearly cried into my napkin. Jackson, our server, moved with such effortless grace that I felt clumsy just watching. The vibe is laid-back but polished, which sounds contradictory, but trust me, it works. My cocktail was so good I forgot to photograph it. That never happens. I just sat there, sipping, smiling, and wondering if I could move in. High praise from a guy who usually spills his drink within five minutes.

Two-sided island bar setup
Attentive bartenders, solid drinks
Casual, welcoming neighborhood vibe

Bar of the Gods is the classic SE Portland joint I always forget about until I’m there, then I remember why I love it. The two-sided island bar means you can always find a seat, and the staff are genuinely friendly. Drink prices are fair, which feels like a miracle these days. Bartenders are attentive, and the drinks are solid. Nothing fancy, just good. The vibe is casual and welcoming, like a worn-in flannel shirt. I came in stressed, left loose. That’s the magic. If you want a no-fuss, good-time bar, this is it. I’ll be back, probably sooner than later.

Spot-on service, consistently
Multiple seating nooks, back patio
Old-school photo booth fun

The Rambler is quiet, which is a compliment. The door guy was so friendly I almost felt bad for not being a regular. Beers, booze, and food all win. Service is spot-on, consistently, which is rare. There are multiple seating nooks, so you can tuck yourself away with a book or a friend. The back patio is a sweet escape from the noise. And the old-school photo booth? I spent way too many quarters in there, making faces for posterity. This place feels like a gentle hug in bar form. I walked out lighter than I walked in. That’s the best kind of evening.

Creative, expansive cocktail menu
Flavorful chicken meatball linguini
Outstanding trout with risotto

Over & Out surprised me. Warm, attentive, speedy service from the moment I sat down. The cocktail menu is creative and expansive, which is dangerous for someone like me who wants to try everything. I ordered the chicken meatball linguini, and it was flavorful enough to make me pause mid-bite. Then came the trout with risotto, and I nearly licked the plate. Portions are solid, prices are fair. This place delivers on every level. I came for a quick drink, stayed for a full meal, and left planning my return. That’s the mark of a true gem, even if I’m not supposed to say that word.

Key Lime Pie cocktail
Great Montucky neon signs
Kind, professional staff
Awesome local atmosphere

Mock Crest Tavern is where the locals go, and I get it. The Key Lime Pie cocktail is a dessert masquerading as a drink, and I’m here for it. The place is decked out in great Montucky neon signs, which gave me a weird sense of comfort. The staff are kind, professional, and somehow know everyone’s name except mine, but they treated me like a regular anyway. The local atmosphere is awesome, unpretentious, and real. I felt like I’d walked into someone’s living room, if that living room had a great beer list. I’ll be back, and I might just bring a friend to spread the joy.

Welcoming regulars, affordable drinks
Naked wings with legendary ranch
Star Burger at a steal
Bathroom art worth seeing

Star Bar is a Portland institution that lives up to the hype. The regulars are welcoming, and the drinks are affordable, which is my love language. Now, the naked wings with legendary ranch. I get it. The ranch is so good I wanted to bottle it and bathe in it. The Star Burger is a steal, and it’s messy in the best way. Also, the bathroom art is worth the trip alone. I spent way too long in there, not because I needed to, but because I couldn’t look away. This bar has personality in every corner. I left full, happy, and with ranch stains on my shirt. Worth it.

Friendly staff, great vibes
Awesome draft selection
Cool lighting, unique atmosphere

Kelly’s Olympian is a sensory overload in the best way. Motorcycle memorabilia covers every inch, and I felt underdressed without a leather jacket. The staff are friendly, and the vibes are immaculate. Their draft selection is awesome, with something for every mood. The lighting is cool, moody, and perfect for pretending I’m in a film noir. This place has a unique atmosphere that’s hard to replicate. I came in for one beer and stayed for three. I’m not a motorcycle guy, but I felt at home anyway. That’s the mark of a truly great bar. I’ll be back, maybe with a bandana. Don’t judge me.

Massive beautiful outdoor seating
Fireplace plus dog friendly
Spotless space, stellar staff
Big groups, better drinks

White Owl Social Club is where big groups go to feel like royalty. The outdoor seating is massive and beautiful, with a fireplace that keeps the chill away. CHEM Gio’s ribs are incredible, and I’m still thinking about them. The space is spotless, which is rare for a patio. The staff are stellar, and the dogs are everywhere, which is my kind of heaven. Big groups fit easily, and the drinks are even better than the crowd. I brought a crew of eight, and everyone left happy. That’s a statistical miracle. I’ve already planned my next visit. If you see me there, say hi. I’ll be the one covered in rib sauce.

Amazing first club experience
Incredible service, great people
Staff is sweet and accommodating
Favorite club in Portland
Respectful security, awesome vibe

District Nightclub was my first club experience, and it set the bar impossibly high. The service is incredible, and the people are genuinely great. The staff are sweet and accommodating, which is not what I expected from a club. Security is respectful, which made me feel safe. The vibe is awesome, and the music keeps you moving. I’ve been to other clubs since, and none match this energy. This is my favorite club in Portland, full stop. I’m not a dancer, but I found myself moving anyway. If you’re nervous about club culture, start here. You’ll be in good hands. I was, and I survived. Barely.

Killer chicken sandwich, perfect every time
Buffalo cauliflower with vegan ranch
Warm, welcoming happy hour staff
Manager Josh makes the experience
Cherry cider that converts skeptics

Metropolitan Tavern hooked me with a chicken sandwich that’s perfect. Like, every single time. The buffalo cauliflower with vegan ranch is my new obsession, and I’m not even vegan. Happy hour staff are warm and welcoming, but the real star is manager Josh. He remembered my order on the second visit. That’s sorcery. The cherry cider? I brought a skeptic, and now they’re a convert. This place feels like a neighborhood secret that’s not so secret anymore. I’m honestly a little mad at how good it is. My jeans are mad too.

Dog-friendly patio paradise
Best edamame ever
Killer vegan comfort food
Friendly staff, delicious drinks
Neighborhood dive with heart

Bye and Bye is my dog’s favorite bar, and honestly, mine too. The patio is a dog-friendly paradise with enough space to sprawl. I had the best edamame of my life here. Edamame! Who knew. The vegan comfort food is killer, even for a carnivore like me. Staff are friendly, drinks are delicious, and the whole place hums with that neighborhood dive energy that makes you want to stay all night. It’s got heart, plain and simple. My pup gave it two paws up, which is the only review that matters. I’m already planning my next trip back.
